Emergency Root Canal Treatment in Miami
Severe tooth pain, swelling, or facial swelling require prompt treatment. Advanced Endodontic Group offers same-day and next-day emergency root canal appointments at both our Miami Lakes and Bay Harbor Islands locations. Do not wait — untreated dental infections can spread and lead to serious complications.
When Is a Root Canal an Emergency?
A dental emergency that may require an urgent root canal includes severe, throbbing tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter medication, visible swelling in the gums, face, or jaw, a tooth that has been knocked out, cracked, or broken from trauma, pus or drainage near a tooth, or a fever accompanying dental pain.
These symptoms often indicate that an infection has reached the pulp (the nerve and blood vessels inside your tooth). Without prompt treatment, the infection can spread to surrounding bone, soft tissue, and in serious cases, become a systemic health risk.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call our office immediately. We maintain flexible scheduling specifically for emergencies and will work to see you as quickly as possible — often the same day.
What Happens During an Emergency Root Canal?
When you arrive for an emergency visit, our endodontist will perform a thorough evaluation using 3D CBCT imaging and a surgical microscope to diagnose the source and extent of the infection. Once the problem is identified, treatment can typically begin immediately.
The emergency root canal procedure follows the same high standard as a scheduled appointment: local anesthesia for complete comfort, removal of infected pulp under microscope magnification, advanced irrigation and disinfection (including Fotona laser-assisted treatment when indicated), and sealing of the canals to prevent reinfection.
Most emergency root canals are completed in a single visit. You will leave with the infection addressed, the pain resolved, and detailed aftercare instructions. Our team will coordinate with your general dentist for the follow-up restoration.
What to Do Before You Get to Our Office
While you wait for your emergency appointment, you can take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication (such as ibuprofen) as directed on the package to help manage pain and reduce swelling. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Avoid chewing on the painful side, and do not apply heat or aspirin directly to the gum tissue.
If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it moist in milk, saliva, or saline. Time is critical — the sooner you reach our office, the better the chances of saving the tooth. See our traumatic dental injuries page for more detailed guidance.

No. You will receive the same effective local anesthesia used in any root canal procedure. The goal of emergency treatment is to eliminate the source of your pain. Most patients feel significant relief immediately after the procedure.

Pain that temporarily subsides does not mean the infection is gone. In some cases, the nerve may die, causing the pain to stop while the infection continues to spread silently. Delaying treatment increases the risk of abscess, bone loss, and tooth loss. Always seek evaluation promptly.
